How is leather cord different from other cords?
The obvious answer to this question, of course, is that leather cord is made of leather. The difference goes deeper than that, though–quite apart from anything else, there are some cords that qualify as ‘leather cord’ that are actually ‘vegetarian’ leather or even reinforced cotton. So what sets them apart?
The main feature of leather cord is that it’s very tough and durable–it can take a great deal more than many other kinds of cording, and is a good choice for projects involving heavy beads with large holes. It’s also easy to knot, and those knots when secured will often last for a long time and be difficult to untie. It comes in a variety of colors, too, and is a good choice for projects where you want the cording to be a part of the design rather than mostly vanish into the background. Read on for a few ideas for what to do with it and how to put it to best use.
Knotted or woven bracelets and necklaces
This is a style that has recently enjoyed an upsurge in popularity. Knotted, woven and beaded jewellery–usually including several ‘feature beads’, often of very sparkly varieties-is becoming ever more fashionable, and leather cord is the perfect medium for making them. Find a tutorial online and have a go at making them yourself; they make wonderful gifts for teenagers and children.
Chunky, eye-catching bracelets and necklaces
If you’re interested mostly in setting off a single pendant or feature bead, using a leather cord with a clasp, the pendant or charm, and nothing else is a great way to do it. Just make sure you choose your closures wisely-not all clasps are suitable for use with leather cord, particularly as it tends generally to be rather wide. You may also like to take advantage of the range of colorways available by co-ordinating your cord with your feature, charm or pendant.
Variable-length bracelets and necklaces
If you’d rather not use a clasp at all–or can’t find one that will fit onto the leather cord you’ve chosen–then it’s very simple to make a variable-length necklace or bracelet simply by tying two knots that are able to slide up and down the cord. This is complicated to explain in words, but actually very simple to understand and work out when you see a picture of it–search for some online.
